Most Popular Products 2007 - 2008

10. Apple MacBook Core 2 Duo notebook PCs - Since its debut in May 2006, the Apple MacBook laptop family has earned a place in the pantheon of Apple's all-time greatest hits. The sturdy, Intel-powered MacBook notebooks have been so popular with consumers, especially students, that they've helped Apple nearly double its laptop sales over the past year or so. The enhancements that Apple made to the MacBook this summer certainly weren't revolutionary - they were more of an evolutionary step. But as the saying goes - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Apple knows when it's on to a winner.

9. Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 - What do you mean, not exciting? Trust us, PC security gets plenty interesting right after your bank account is emptied by a group of online thugs. Internet security suites are always popular with discerning punters, and Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 this year proved especially popular. Kaspersky crams top-notch antivirus and antispyware protection into a product that will give you change out of £30. It's a handy trick to pull off. And you don't have to take our word for it. Not only was Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 the ninth most read review on PC Advisor this year, but our readers gave it a User Rating of four stars. High praise indeed from a tough crowd (believe me).

8. BitDefender Total Security 2008 - But Kaspersky's wasn't the most popular internet security suite this year on PC Advisor. Still more readers were interested in BitDefender Total Security 2008. With a veritable laundry list of security features, plus tune-up tools for your PC, it isn't hard to see why BitDefender proved so popular. Priced at only £31 BitDefender Total Security 2008 was a shoo-in for a PC Advisor Gold Award. And even the notoriously difficult to please PCA readership afforded BitDefender some praise. A three-star User Rating is every bit as valuable as a PC Advisor Gold Award. And one reader, 'hevei', went so far as to say: "I just bought BitDefender 2008 Total Security and I fell in love with it instantly." There really isn't much more you can add to that.

7. HP Photosmart C3180 - Multifunction printers have come a long way in a short time, and HP has the habit of making mundane products feel like slick consumer kit. Despite costing comfortably less than £100, with the HP Photosmart C3180 you don't have to compromise on print quality. High-quality photos and scans appear quickly and it's a cinch to use. No wonder so many of you wanted to read about the HP Photosmart C3180.

6. BlackBerry Curve 8310 - Proof Apple wasn't going to have 2007 all its own way, the BlackBerry Curve 8310 boasts email and internet capabilities, a 3Mp camera and satnav. Crucially, Mr Jobs take note, it's a 3G handset. Good-looking and feature rich - with satellite navigation that, unusually, actually works (and works well) - the decision to bestow a PC Advisor Gold Award was a cinch. And given its popularity, it seems you shared our high opinion of the BlackBerry Curve 8310.

5. Microsoft Office 2007 - Launched with marginally less fanfare and hyperbole than Windows Vista, Office 2007 is one of three products from Microsoft in our top five products of the year. Reports of Redmond's demise have been greatly exaggerated, it would appear. Office 2007 had the distinction of being a productivity software upgrade that was worth making - and talking about. With more apps and many design improvements, existing Office 2003 users have been won over by how easy the all-new 'ribbon' makes accessing functions. But at £330 for Office 2007 Standard, and with low-cost and free alternatives proliferating, the decision to upgrade remains a tricky one.

4. Apple iPhone - We don't know if you've heard but, apparently, Apple released a phone this year. From the minute Steve Jobs hitched up his belt-free jeans and unleashed the full force of Apple's hype machine on a hand-picked audience of whoopers and hollarers, readers have devoured any story about the world's favourite bright-and-shiny thing. So it's no surprise that our iPhone review has proved popular - but what about the phone itself? Well, if you want to love Apple's much-hyped gadget, you'll find plenty to go ga-ga over. It looks beautiful and it works well. It is. Just. Cool. But not everyone is as enamoured as the PC Advisor readers who gave the iPhone an unprecedented five-star User Rating - no-one could argue that the iPhone is inexpensive, you are tied in to a lengthy contract and web access is not the quickest. Or, indeed, anywhere near the quickest. But love it or loathe it (or seethe with resentment at the fact that you love it but can't afford it), the iPhone is a talking point, and it's here to stay.

3. Windows Vista - But as popular as it is, the iPhone doesn't even make the top three. And this year's other hype magnet only just scrapes in. Has any OS been so maligned and so praised during a painfully long development cycle as Windows Vista? After a longer than expected wait, Microsoft finally launched its 'most significant' ever OS to the sound of billions of shrugged shoulders and a tidal wave of shuffling feet. 'Underwhelming' is putting it kindly. Many months later and the jury remains well-and-truly out on Vista, which has the unhappy task of following in XP a truly successful operating system. (When Apple slickly launched its own next-gen OS to universal acclaim, things got even tougher for Microsoft.) But all is not lost for Windows Vista. It's great to look at, easy to use and more secure than previous Microsoft OSes. PC Advisor readers gave Vista a better than average three-star User Rating and - let's face it - if you buy a PC in the next year or two, you'll probably buy Vista. Either way, our review proved to be essential reading.

2. Acer Aspire 5920 - The top PC review of the year, what was it about the Acer Aspire 5920 that attracted your attention? Possibly you were impressed by the Acer's good looks and strong feature set. More likely, the Acer won (many, many) friends by being the first PC we saw to run Intel's much-vaunted Santa Rosa chipset. Intel has spent much of 2007 bashing AMD with a big stick, and Santa Rosa has been its its biggest weapon. So Acer should play nicely and let Intel have at least half the credit for the Acer Aspire 5920 Intel Santa Rosa Laptop's success. The laptop itself is a solid performer, with decent looks, excellent audio and a hefty hard drive. But it was the first glimpse of Intel's latest AMD-crushing device that made the Acer our second most popular product of the year.

1. Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite - That's right, the product most people wanted to read about in 2007 was a games console. Not the much-hyped but underwhelming Sony PlayStation 3, nor Nintendo's popular, specs-lite and chick-friendly Wii. No, this year's number one is a Microsoft product that arrived with little fanfare and, well, was just good. Take that Office and Vista. Microsoft took the already-winning Xbox games console, and made it better. The unit's bolstered specs - such as a 120GB hard disk drive and an HDMI 1.2 connector, perfect for today's high-def TVs - mean more room to store digital content, and a better way to view high-definition content. HDMI capability alone makes the Elite a more-appealing option if you're planning on buying your first Xbox. And, of course, it helps if your games console is the sole home for Halo 3 - not so much a game as a behemoth.
